Pamodzi Project Praised for Boosting SRHR Services in Malawi’s Higher Education Institutions

Malawi’s Minister of Health, Hon. Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, has commended the Pamodzi Project, led by MANSO, for its crucial role in increasing access to Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) services among adolescents in higher education institutions.

Speaking at the joint 2024/2025 World AIDS Day and International AIDS Candle Light commemoration, held on December 1, 2024, at the University of Malawi in Zomba, Minister Chiponda emphasized the importance of creating demand for SRHR services.

Key Highlights

1. Increased Access to SRHR Services: The Pamodzi Project has contributed significantly to increased uptake of SRHR services among adolescents in higher education institutions.
2. Reducing Stigma and Discrimination: Minister Chiponda stressed the need for learners to take their ARVs without fear of stigma and discrimination.
3. Collaboration and Support: The Ministry of Health is working with the Ministry of Education to implement strategies supporting children and adolescents in boarding schools.

National AIDS Commission Board Chairperson Dr. Chipo Kanjo noted that young people, particularly adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), remain disproportionately at risk of HIV infection.

USAID supports MANASO, NAPHAM and IFC to interact with AGYW and ABYM in institutions of higher learning to seek health care and GBV services.
